Lawrence Cosplay Update Report 01
It still needs to be sanded and Rub'n'Buffed, but I made the brooch!
The brooch is a resin casting, with two pins embedded on the back (so it's not all wibbly-wobbly), and I inserted the pin that the beads are on while the casting was still soft so they're in there pretty well. The blue bead is actually purple on the other side, but I figured that as long as I keep the blue side out, it'll be perfect. (I had these on hand and didn't really feel like hunting down more blue beads considering that beads for Tasuki have been a pain in the butt.) I did the rectangular area and triangular area for simplicity's sake (and because with A.R.'s, we did it as two pieces and have found that the jump rings we used are too small and weak, and keep coming out. I really don't feel like dealing with that.) I definitely need to sand out some of the major imperfections that aren't really apparent here but are downright garish IRL, and I need to do a top-coat of gold. I added gold paint to the resin though so that if the top coat gets scratched or smudged off, there will still be a gold colour underneath so the damaged finish will be less noticeable. Nothing screams "LOOK I'M NOT REALLY METAL" more than white showing through the top coat. This way, a scuff will just look like an area that needs polishing.
Admittedly, I'm actually pretty unhappy with the mold; it turned out badly (air bubbles and a hole), but it's expensive stuff so for a one-off piece, I'm just making do with this. The master I sculpted also shattered when I went to de-mold it (I just used a very basic clay that can be re-hydrated since I figured I didn't really need to keep the master). If I were to re-do the master for a better casting, I would want to use some crafting plastic or wood for the basic shapes, then fill in the details with Apoxie Sculpt or another epoxy that doesn't shrink while curing. I wasn't happy with how this clay decided that being flat just wasn't a thing it wanted to do.
As for the rest of the costume, basically no progress has been made. I haven't found ideal purple fabric yet. Well, I did find a Japanese site that has BASICALLY PERFECT fabric (purple with gold birds all over it), but from what I understand, it would cost about $50 shipped for two yards, and I just can't justify spending that much for that amount of fabric at this point in my life. So I'm still on the hunt. .... Do you guys suppose that purple fabric with butterflies or dragon flies would be okay? I've seen some of that around for decent prices.
I also haven't made progress on his wig yet since I didn't get a lacefronting tool in until yesterday (and another character that needs lacefronting is ahead of him on my list now due to the fact that I actually have the fabric for him) - I had small crochet hooks that I wanted to try and see if they'd fit through the lace and they did not, and I tried checking some local wig shops to see if they had lacefronting tools.
Oh, I also got a ring to use instead of my Philosopher's Stone ring for the silver/red ring since my Philosopher's Stone ring is too big for my ring finger. I found it at a flea market for $4, and the flea market was a charity drive for Good Mews, so not only did I find cosplay props (I also picked up a few brooches), but I helped out needy kitties. I also converted one of the shiny Burgur King display PokeBalls (my Mom was also into Pokemon, so we wound up with a bunch of the fancy ones to the point where we have duplicates and a couple have damaged boxes now) into a jewelry case. I stuck a chunk of foam in the top part so that Lawrence's rings and earring have a place to live, and my brooches for Morty and Lawrence now live in the bottom. I misplaced my badge for Morty, but if I find or re-make that, it'll also go in this somewhere. Current Mood: groggy

So.... I'm planning a Jiri cosplay.
I've been meaning to cosplay ol' Law-Law for a while now, but I've been sticking him on the backburner a little too much. However! Arda Wigs recently put some of their lace-front wigs on clearance, so I got a wig that I intend to use for him. Unfortunately, they ran out of the lighter greens before I could get one, so I'm going to be dying a teal wig so his hair will be a little on the dark end, but still. Lace-front Jiri wig for a good price, heck yeah!
I'm now just trying to finalize my fabric selection for him. I've always wanted to do him in brocade, since he's pretentious like that, but at the same time, I don't want to go TOO flashy with it. So since the blue part of his changshan is the most prevalent colour, I'm thinking of light blue fabric with light blue details - very subtle, like this: http://www.amazon.com/Brocade-Jacquard-Satin-Fabric-Exchange/dp/B00E5QEIE4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1394252896&sr=8-1&keywords=light+blue+brocade
(Also, another character I'm planning on cosplaying also has an outfit that I plan to do in brocade with light blue sections, and I was considering using the same light blue for both of them, which is another reason why I want a fairly neutral light blue so it'll be easier to co-ordinate with the other character's outfit as well.)
Maybe I won't use exactly that fabric for the blue, but something pretty neutral like that. I did spot a white brocade with white stitching that had birds on it that I could possibly dye light blue (though I'd rather try and keep it simple).
However, I'm not sure if I want the purple part to be as conservative as the blue or if I should go with something a little more interesting. They make a purple version of the above fabric, which I could use:http://www.amazon.com/Brocade-Jacquard-Purple-Fabric-Exchange/dp/B00E5QGSXI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1394252995&sr=8-2&keywords=purple+brocade+fabric
I do wonder if that using that purple with the above blue might actually work out to be a bit too plain. I wonder if I should go with something like this damask design, an aesthetic with ties to the Victorian era and the high-class dandies of the time: http://www.amazon.com/Egyptian-Damask-Polyester-Brocade-Fabric/dp/B00HYN32X8/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1394252995&sr=8-6&keywords=purple+brocade+fabric
Or perhaps this dragon fabric, as it's hard to go wrong with dragons:http://www.amazon.com/Purple-Dragon-Floral-Brocade-Fabric/dp/B005Y63H14/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1394252995&sr=8-4&keywords=purple+brocade+fabric
If I could find a good purple phoenix/peacock brocade, that might be especially fitting, but so far the best I seem to be able to find is one that has both phoenixes and dragons: http://www.syfabrics.com/View.aspx/Chinese-Satin-Dragon-Phoenix-Brocade/Purple-Dragon-Brocade/338/176
The only phoenix-centric one I've found so far focuses entirely on the tail feathers, not the bird as a whole. And it's a black fabric with purple feathers rather than being a purple fabric: http://www.etsy.com/listing/158569151/cbs-603-chinese-brocade-fabric-violet
What do you guys think? Current Mood: sleepy

Takeshi Shudo, the late writer of a bunch of anime stuff including the second movie, kept a blog as it turns out
. I ran it through a translator and there’s some interesting stuff about Jiri. Basically he said that the movie called for a powerful villain…and he intentionally didn’t go that route. He also said (a direct quote, though cleaned up a bit from the translator) "If Mewtwo is Hamlet, Jirarudan is Don Quixote”

So some friends and I are kinda sorta running a round-robin BESM campaign set in the Puella Magi Madoka Magica universe. I'm going to be sticking Jiri in as an NPC when I start DMing it (in our thing, gender isn't a factor with who can make a contract, though he will be around 15 instead of the 20something he is in canon). I would say more but I don't know how many of you guys have seen Madoka so I don't want to spoil anything! Though I can tell I'm going to have loads of fun with him, even though what I have planned for him isn't quite.... the most pleasant thing.
I'm also going to stick Eusine in there sorta after Jiri, which will be both fun as hell and utterly terrifying (for the party, anyway).
Just thought I'd let you guys know this nonsense :P

Somewhat OT, though still relevant to this community's interests IMHO
I'm pretty sure everyone here knows I'm a huge Gundam fan (and if you didn't, now you do!). The timeline I'm the most dedicated to, the Universal Century (which is actually the first and most important Gundam universe on the Japanese end of things) has a new OVA that's currently coming out called Gundam Unicorn. It's all kinds of awesome and sexy and has the most beautiful soundtrack ever and ;3;wlefnfkvnfjn BUT I DIGRESS.
What the butt does this have to do with our beloved Jirizzle? Well Gundam Unicorn has introduced us to a new faction at play in the Universal Century, the Vist Foundation
. They're a bunch of art collectors who've secretly been pulling the strings on some of the inner working of the Earth Federation government for quite a while. And to top it off, it's headed by this guy
, Cardeas Vist who I swear looks like he could be Jiri's father. He's also a total fucking badass and has some pretty awesome digs (not an airship though, just a fancy mansion).
Does this tempt me more than it should to write bizarre crossovers I probably shouldn't write? You bet your buns.

So if you guys have been watching Jirarudan's Pixiv tag
, you'll have noticed something interesting. Pretty much half the art in there has been added in the past two months.
While I'm not sure why the sudden upswing has taken place, it certainly benefits us! Most of it is by two artists. Maybe they know each other. I don't know.
One of them has even made a Jirarudan emoticon!
If anyone knows how to make those symbols it would be much appreciated.

Interests, relevant, etc.
So a friend of mine is doing Nostalgia Critic-style reviews of websites. The second review he did was of fanfiction.net, and let's just say one of the pieces he selected for the "bad" section is quite relevant to the interests of this group. I admit Z and I are the ones who pushed for it to be included because we're biased like that, but hey, it worked very well for what he's trying to do. www.thenetcritic.com/review/fanfictionnet

Wonder of anyone here remembers that fic, btw?

An amusing occurance
You guys know what's awkward? When some kid starts chatting up you and your friends about a certain kids' movie, right when your in the middle of texting someone about the sex life of a certain character in said kids' movie.
This may or may not have happened to me at TCG a while back *coughs*

So um...where'd the website go?
|Tuesday, November 9th, 2010|
So if Jirarudan actually had some pokemon, what could you see him with?
The one that comes immediately to mind for me is Natu. It's a bird, it's got the same type combination as Lugia, and its evolution sees the past and future without paying attention to the present.
I was also thinking Murkrow, but NOT Honchkrow. It's not elegant enough. This badass
looks promising as well (gen 5 spoilers).
...Would he have a Milotic or is that too played out for his tastes? Claydol, is it too bulky for him or would he appreciate the ancientness of the species? I think Rotom would interest him but it would be too dangerous to have around all that electronic equipment (imagine it--Fly Rotom--the airship with the Rotom face on it).

So, I actually exist, and I bring Jiri goodness.
I'm the friend Android Raptor keeps mentioning, so here's proof of my existence. XD I thought I'd finally post my 1/6 Jiri (yes, I have one, too! Well, technically three, but the other two are weird) because I like how pretty he is in his Halloween costume (he went as an angel). I haven't made his official outfit yet because I want to do it in brocade and can't find the right ones yet.
His eyebrow chipped, unfortunately, and his hair is a little messed up at the moment. I need to wet it again so it will be right again.( Read more...Collapse )
I don't know if you heard, but Takeshi Shudo died
. He was a writer on the first three movies, and it's rumored that he created Lugia.

I figured it was high time to show you my collection.( Watashi wa...Collector na no daCollapse )
Well, that's the tour! Like I said, there was a lot of stuff I either forgot or just plain couldn't find, so I have even more! And I'm always looking for more than that. What sort of collector would I be if I didn't?
I hope you enjoyed my collection! You can call it a collection when you can see it with your own eyes.
